Trying to get a local skatepark built?

tiverton mini ramp
Read this report by Milan Recknagel, written as part of his University dissertation, 'Do skateparks reduce anti-social behaviour?'

He wrote to residents near Flowerpot skatepark (built by Boarding House for Exeter City Council), and out of the replies he got,
over 80% agreed -

# The skatepark provides an important social facility for young people
# The skatepark provides an important sports facility for young people
# There should be more skateparks for young people

Message is, BUILD MORE SKATEPARKS, MAKE PEOPLE HAPPY!

New Skatepark Opening 26-4-09 Barnstaple

Barnstaple skatepark

Check the pic, Barnstaple getting it's last finishing touches for opening day, 26-4-09. Park is made by Gravity, who created Decoy Bowl at Newton Abbot, so quality should be good. The brick quarter area on the left is about 2, 2 and a half foot high, then the main area to the right is about 4 foot high. I guess the bowl in the top right corner is 4 to 5 feet. For the bmxers, check out the trails in the field above the park (see top of pic). It's in Rock Park, Barnstaple, next to the river. In the local paper here

#### UPDATE ON CULLOMPTON SKATEPARK ####

Ok, have to say our previous report on Cullompton was inaccurate, in that it isn't open 'NOW'.
It's rideable, and seemingly finished, but is fenced off with 'Not completed, open early in New Year' signs on it.

sign from cullumpton
Park is fun, as discovered by our intrepid (un-named) reporter, see flash sequence above, eyes blacked out to protect the not-so-innocent . . . .

Next to swimming pool, follow the chavalanche. . .

##### NEW RAMPS AT ARENA ######

new arena driveway

New driveway combination at Exeter Arena Skatepark, built by Boarding House for Exeter City Council. Everyone is raving about this, all the bmxers loving the jump box, which has had the bejeezus flipped and whipped out of it already. Hip, pyramid, rail, 2 blocks and the pier 7/little lloyds block. Check it out . . . .

SPOT GUIDE WORK IN PROGRESS, STUFF SO FAR…..

Hi, welcome to the fifth edition of ‘The Spot Guide’. This is obviously not a full listing of the parks in the South-West, just some of the shop favourites. If you want more detailed or up to date info, call the shop and we’ll give you a run down.

South Molton. Go up North Devon Link Rd A361 from M5. Turn left off at roundabout signed South Molton. As you drive into town, take directions for ‘Somerfield’, which is first left after garage as you enter town. Park outside Somerfield, Skatepark is in park opposite.
Concrete, mostly flat bank and bowled corner about 4 feet high.

Nearest cold cider- spar in town, normally has selection.

Tiverton. Go up North Devon Link Rd A361 from M5. Take left off SECOND turning signed Tiverton, at a roundabout. Straight over mini-roundabout, Skatepark is on left, opposite college and next to Leisure Centre.
Skatelite ramps om tarmac base. Wide range of stuff.

Nearest cold cider- offey or corner shop in west exe north st. Normally at least 3 varieties in fridge, inc special vat! #Update# went to tiv recently, this is now a six star cold cider location (and the scale only goes to five..) The corner shop had 6, yes 6 canned ciders in fridge- special vat, blackthorn,  scrumpy jack, natch, ohmygod and brainstormer. Top marks!

Flowerpot. By river Exe. If heading over Exe Bridges from town, take last turning before you come back over river, ‘Okehampton Rd’, go 200 yards, take right into ‘Flowerpot Lane’ before railway bridge. Follow river to Skatepark in Exwick Playing Fields. Or walk over footbridge next to ‘Mill-on-the-Exe’ pub in Bonhay Rd. Skatelite.

Nearest cold cider- threshers or cheers in cowick st, selection at both, bonus. Cheers v.cheap.

Arena Park. Head out of town, past ‘Odeon’ cinema, up Blackboy Rd, down Pinhoe Rd, keep going til you see Costcutter, Bakery, Charity Shop on left. Take left just before these shops, ‘Summer Lane’. Go up Summer Lane, Skatepark is on right just after railway bridge. Next to ‘Exeter Arena’ running track. Skatelite.

Nearest cold cider- Poor, try costcutter, couple of  scrumpy jacks in fridge if you’re lucky..

Sidmouth. Take A3052 to Sidmouth from Exeter. Ignore first right signed Sidmouth, take second on a half mile later. Follow rd, take left turn after Lidl and garage, Skatepark is in park on right. Concrete ramps on tarmac base.

Nearest cold cider- forget the newsagent offey by garage, head towards town and there is spar on right. 8 packs of blackthorn in fridge for fiver occasionally!

Penzance. In Princess May recreation ground. Coming into Penzance from the east, take A30 bypass on right before town. Look out for left signed ‘Trenere Estate’, drive through estate, Skatepark is on left off ‘Coombe Rd’, opposite school. Concrete.

Nearest cold cider- hmmm. there is a convenience store on estate down from park-but closes at lunchtime! Ended up going back down bypass to supermarket for off-the-shelf cider, and ice from freezer. Hardly satisfactory, must be something better.

Camborne. To get there come off the A30 at Pool/Camborne, approaching the roundabout at tuckingmill, look to your right you will see the park on the opposite side of the valley. Turn right at the roundabout, then turn right at bottom of hill, park at bottom, walk on down path to Skatepark. Concrete.

Nearest cold cider- Ask one of the resident Lambrini girls, they should know. Get some tips on drinking from them (spinning around looking up whilst necking said Lambrini. Definitely appeared to work…).

Newquay-  Follow signs to Newquay Zoo (off Edgcumbe Avenue), drive into Zoo entrance, past Zoo, on up past Waterworld pool, Skatepark is at top. Wood.

Nearest cold cider- turn right out of zoo entrance, follow road to parade of shops. Spar, trust your luck…

Totnes- next to a train station, which is handy cos then you can hop on a train to a good skatepark…somewhere else….
Concrete ramps on tarmac base, nothing over 8 feet wide, tight.

Brixham- As you approach Brixham on the A3022, park is on right just before you enter town. Couple of miles before there is a small mini opposite golf course. Metal, GBH ramps- so ok if recently painted, slippy as hell if not.

Nearest cold cider-thresher in town. So usual gamble, cos threshers policy on what goes in their fridge varies..so  may have blackthorn, olde english in the fridge…then again, maybe just that magners rubbish. Ice! I ask ya!

Paignton-   Skatepark is in Victoria Park, middle of town. Metal, GBH plaza-type affair. Fun, meant to be getting more stuff added.

Nearest cold cider- poor, spar by railway HAS NO FRIDGE, bargain booze by railway had strongbow in fridge, pah. Ok for the desperate.

Plymouth-  In central park, in middle of town. By Mayflower leisure centre. Bowl, hips, long quarter, flat banks. Concrete.

Nearest cold cider- it’s Plymouth, probably get something far stronger from one of the chavs by the skatepark. Or, it’s a naval port, there will be booze everywhere! In other words, I don’t know….
